The VSS (Russian: Винтовка Снайперская Специальная, Vintovka Snayperskaya Spetsialnaya, meaning special sniper rifle), also known as the Vintorez (thread cutter), is a silenced sniper rifle developed by the former Soviet Union in the 1980s. It was primarily issued to Russian special forces (Spetsnaz) for undercover or covert operations. Its highlights include its disassembly and portability in a dedicated carrying bag (equipped with two magazines, a PSO-1 sniper scope, and an NSPU-3 night vision scope). The VSS features an integrated silencer and fires specially designed, heavier 9 x 39mm subsonic ammunition.

It is equipped with a metal front section with an internal silencer (and front and rear sights).

It features a metal receiver with side rails for mounting a PSO-1 sniper scope.

The suppressor can store a lithium-polymer battery (Mini Tamiya Connector).
