The idea of using sparks produced by rubbing iron against a hard stone as a gun ignition device has existed since around the 16th century. It is believed that Leonardo da Vinci left sketches of this type of gun structure around this time.
The first commercially produced and historically significant guns used a mechanical mechanism that rubbed iron against a hard stone, a precise structure similar to a clock using a spring. This was later called the wheel-lock type. However, actual products were large and complex, impractical, and expensive, so they only became widespread among a select few.
In the early 17th century, a new mechanism appeared: the hammer was shaped like a bird's beak to hold the flint, and the flashing cover was raised in an L-shape to receive the flint. When the flint strikes the iron plate, sparks are produced, and simultaneously, the flash pan springs up along with the iron plate, igniting the open flash pan. This was a groundbreaking invention and later came to be known as the flintlock.
It had almost the same number of parts as the matchlock, and its practicality, such as not needing to hold a lit matchlock, made it widely used for both civilian and military purposes. The 18th century was the age of the flintlock pistol, encompassing the early American frontier and the subsequent Revolutionary War.
The flintlock pistol that KTW modeled is preserved at West Point Military Academy in the United States, and bears the inscription of George Washington, the first president of the United States, on its grip. It was manufactured by the London gun maker Hawkins and is believed to have been produced around 1780.
