- Beech – The Mainstay (Laminated Form) of Guns in the Later Period: As the war expanded in 1939-1940, the German army faced a severe shortage of Beech wood. To accelerate production and utilize Germany's abundant forest resources, German engineers developed the laminated wood process, with beech wood as its core raw material. Characteristics: Ordinary solid beech wood was prone to warping, but the Germans sliced the beech wood into thin sheets, coated them with a special phenolic resin (glue), and then laminated them under high pressure. This "laminated beech stock" surpassed the earlier solid walnut stock in terms of moisture resistance, warping resistance, and structural strength, at the cost of slightly increased weight.
