The official name in the US military is "United States Rifle, 7.62 mm, M14".

It was developed as an improved version of the M1 Garand used in World War II and the Korean War, and was deployed in the Vietnam War, but for various reasons, it was replaced by the M16.

However, because it has a long effective range and is suitable for long-distance shooting, some units, mainly the Marines and special forces, continue to use it as a sniper rifle.

This model was spotlighted when Randy Shugart used a dot sight/painted version in the movie "Black Hawk Down".
